Popular music might still be distinguished from ‘classical’ music, even still regarded as inferior, but at least jazz and reggae have now come to be accepted as kinds of music (not just ‘jungle noises’), alongside Bartok quartets, and are widely enjoyed even among the white upper and middle classes, despite their social distance from black culture. A much more radical CLASSIC CONCEPTIONS OF CULTURE 19 critique of cultural élitism came, not surprisingly, from a very different theoretical source— Marxism—in the writings of the Italian Communist, Antonio Gramsci (1891–1937), which became widely available in English in the 1970s.

I do not mean that no distinction is made between the obviously coercive and often bloody history of Western colonial expansion and the ‘soft’ cultural imperialism of McDonald’s hamburgers, Michael Jackson videos or Hollywood movies. But I think it is often the case that these and many other instances of Western cultural power get lumped together— ‘totalised’—by the term ‘Westernisation’ and that the result is an impression of the inexorable advance— even the ‘triumph’ of the West. It is this particular totalising assumption that I think could benefit from being unpacked and critically examined.
